Tisha B’Av

Tisha B’Av commemorates the destruction of both Temples, and other times of exile and destruction throughout Jewish history. Gesher | The Bridge Shul and our friends from Temple Adas Israel have traditionally observed this day together, to model the way in which focusing on what we share, rather than on our differences, is an essential part of rebuilding when things fall apart.
August 2 evening service and reading of Lamentations
August 3 afternoon/evening service, followed by break-fast

Faith and Fear, Repression and Resilience: David Townsend introduces The Ram in the Thicket

Polarized political groups vie for power. Religious leaders push for harshly intolerant rules. Lies and "cancellation" hound those who don't fit in. A small minority suffering from inherited trauma are especially targeted. A charismatic outsider spreads conspiracy theories. A wise woman with influence but no power fights to do damage control behind the scenes.

Welcome to Norwich, England, 1413, and an old/new story of the struggle for faith in a complex, flawed world, the triumph of love over dogma, and the resilience of oppressed minorities in the face of abusive power….

The Power of Lament — An Interfaith Conversation on Public Lamentation in Religious Tradition, and How It Might Help America Today

The Power of Lament — An Interfaith Conversation on Public Lamentation in Religious Tradition, and How It Might Help America Today

  • Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church Parish Hall (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Many religious traditions observe periods of ritualized public lamentation, a counter-cultural practice in contemporary America. Secular society offers contexts for public protest, and for memorializing those killed in battle. We're especially good at public airings of anger and grievance. But public lament seems to have fallen by the wayside.

What do we do with the Book of Lamentations and the prophecy of Jeremiah, sacred scripture to both Christians and Jews? What function do those books serve theologically, emotionally, societally, politically? What happens when a society can’t or won’t acknowledge and grieve loss together? How might lamenting together help us heal some of our anger, woundedness and division?

Life as An Improvisatory Art: Merle Feld and Jonathan Silin in Conversation with Rabbi Jan Uhrbach

In her groundbreaking book Composing a Life cultural anthropologist Mary Catherine Bateson profiled four woman who constructed meaningful writing lives while juggling multiple commitments to others. Taking their prompt from Bateson’s idea of “life as an improvisatory art” Merle and Jonathan will look back over their own long writing histories to explore how they first took shape and evolved over time. Although their outward circumstances are different, they share a passionate determination to find meaning in and among the seemingly conflicting elements of their lives. Working across and between traditional genres, Merle and Jonathan each cleared unique writing spaces to find and give voice to their untold stories.

Discussion follows Kabbalat Shabbat at 6 pm. Community dinner following.
